Choosing shelf-stable food your family will actually eat, and keeping it fresh.

Choose no-cook, low-water foods

  • Canned meats, beans, vegetables, and fruit.
  • Peanut butter, nuts, dried fruit, and energy/protein bars.
  • Crackers, cereal, and shelf-stable milk.
  • Comfort foods and anything for special diets or allergies.

Don’t forget

A manual can opener and eating utensils. Choose foods that need little or no water, refrigeration, or cooking.

Rotate

Mark purchase dates and use the oldest first, replacing as you go. Check expiration dates twice a year.
