Build a 72-Hour Kit

The core supplies every household should have ready to grab — enough to be self-sufficient for three days.

The essentials

  • Water (1 gal/person/day) and non-perishable food for 3 days.
  • Flashlight and extra batteries; battery or hand-crank NOAA weather radio.
  • First aid kit and a 3+ day supply of medications.
  • Whistle, dust masks (N95), work gloves, multi-tool, and duct tape.
  • Phone charger / power bank, local maps, and emergency cash in small bills.
  • Copies of key documents in a waterproof bag.

Tailor it to your household

Add diapers, formula, and comfort items for children; food, water, and records for pets; spare glasses, hearing-aid batteries, or mobility supplies as needed.

Keep it usable

Store the kit in easy-to-carry containers near an exit. Keep a smaller version in each vehicle. Review it every six months and refresh water, food, and medications.
